Moulting

Moulting....Akitas moult twice a year.. I would say that the winter/spring moult is the worst! As you can see below they shed an entire layer of fur over a 3-4 week period. Beware you either need to keep your Akita outside during this period, or be very prepared with lots of extra hoover bags and a very pet friendly hoover!
Going on walks with your Akita in this state, do not be surprised when you are aroused by funny looks wondering what on earth you have done to your dog! I am used to it now and pay no notice, or smile and say that you are so happy moulting only happens twice per year. Other than these occasions, an Akita is not know to shed much throughout the year.

If you would like to speed the process of the moult in your Akita I recommend a bath, blow-dry and a good brushing. This process will loosen any dead hair. Hopefully after a bath and a few days of a thorough brush your moult season should be near its end.

I use and recommend a Challenge Air DoubleK 2000 plus, which is specifically designed for pets. These blasters are a bit on the expensive side (rage from £150 up to £599), but will dry your Akita in half the time and also without drying out their coat. Click here to visit Petcetera. Cick Site map and look under Dryers and blasters. If you are looking to purchase one for your family pet I would be happy to help you find a suitable dryer for your Akita... please email me for further details.
Another option would be to use a shop vac with a blow option. With a much lower shelf price of approx £40 as well giving you the same end result. Earlex Wet n Dry Vac has a 1000w motor with a blow option priced at approx £38.00.
